One Year Into President Trump's Second Term

[firstname],

On January 20, 2025, Washington was buzzing with excitement and optimism. Just two months earlier, 77 million Americans had cast their ballots to return President Donald Trump to the White House.

Because of bitterly cold temperatures, President Trump’s inauguration ceremony was moved from the West Front of the U.S. Capitol into the Capitol Rotunda. For anyone who has taken a tour of the Capitol, you know just how cavernous and magnificent the Rotunda truly is. Surrounded by larger-than-life paintings depicting some of the most iconic moments in our nation’s history, President Trump was sworn in at noon. The last president to take the oath of office here was Ronald Reagan in 1985.

Since President Trump returned to office, House Republicans have worked hand-in-hand with the administration to deliver on the promises we made in 2024: to rein in the runaway inflation created by the Biden Administration, restore respect for America on the world stage, secure our border, and put working families back in control of their hard-earned dollars.

Taking Immediate Action

President Trump wasted no time getting to work. On his first day in office, he signed a series of executive orders reversing some of the most damaging Biden-era policies. These actions reopened domestic energy production, eliminated burdensome regulations that were driving up costs for families and small businesses, and began restoring common sense to Washington.

As a result, America is pro-growth again. Companies from around the globe are investing trillions of dollars in American communities—reshoring manufacturing, onshoring supply chains, and creating thousands of new jobs for American workers.

Many of these executive actions focused on unleashing American energy, including directing the EPA to repeal the Clean Power Plan 2.0 (echoing my own legislation to nullify the rule), eliminating wasteful subsidies of the Green New Scam, and resetting the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards that were imposed under President Biden. Those CAFE standards effectively phased out gas-powered vehicles and served as a de facto electric vehicle mandate.

House Republicans have worked to ensure these reforms endure. So far, we have codified more than 70 of President Trump’s executive orders into law, locking in pro-growth, pro-worker policies that cannot be undone by the stroke of a pen.

Boosting Affordability

One of the most transformative achievements of the past year has been the enactment of the Working Families Tax Cuts. At a time when families were still feeling the sting from President Biden’s record inflation, Republicans delivered meaningful relief by lowering taxes and allowing families to keep more of what they earn.

These tax cuts include:

  • No tax on tips or overtime pay
  • An additional $6,000 deduction for middle- and low-income seniors
  • No tax on auto loan interest for American-made vehicles
  • Making permanent the doubled standard deduction—preventing a $15,000 tax increase for the average worker
  • Boosting the Child Tax Credit to $2,200 and indexing it to inflation—currently used by 99,540 taxpayers in Ohio’s 12th District
  • Expanding 529 savings accounts to help families choose education that best fits their needs
  • Provides a $1,000 savings account to support the future of every newborn child

These tax cuts are about kitchen-table economics. For families in Ohio and across the country, this means more money for groceries, gas, child care, and saving for the future.

Securing the Border

The Biden Administration’s failure at the southern border created chaos, endangered communities, and overwhelmed local resources. Over the past year, President Trump and House Republicans have taken decisive steps to reverse that damage—resulting in a 92% drop in nationwide illegal border crossings.

We have reinstated strong border enforcement policies, increased support for our Border Patrol agents, and made it clear that the United States will once again enforce its immigration laws.

In fact, the very first bill President Trump signed into law was the Laken Riley Act, which requires federal law enforcement to issue detainers and take custody of illegal aliens who commit crimes such as theft, burglary, larceny, and shoplifting. This commonsense law helps ensure that individuals who break our laws are not released back into our communities.

The Road Ahead

One year into President Trump’s second term, the contrast could not be clearer. Inflation is receding, America’s standing in the world is strengthening, and Washington is once again focused on serving the people—not special interests or radical agendas.

I look forward to continuing this work on behalf of Ohio’s 12th Congressional District and ensuring that the next three years build on what we've achieved so far.
