Balderson Responds to the Ongoing Attack on Israel

[firstname],

On October 7th, the world looked on in horror as Israel, our greatest friend and ally in the Middle East, came under barbaric attack. In just a matter of hours, hundreds of innocent people, including American citizens, were captured or brutally murdered by Hamas, the terror group that governs the neighboring Gaza Strip. In the days following the initial invasion, gruesome images of victims were circulated online. We heard terrifying first-hand accounts of the attack while the estimated death toll rose into the thousands.

My thoughts are with the families of all those who have lost their lives, and I pray that all the hostages will safely return home soon.

In Washington, I’ve been doing my part to stand up to Hamas and reassure our friends in the Jewish community both here and in Israel of our unwavering support.

Reaffirming Support for Israel and Our Jewish Communities

Immediately following the attack, I signed on as an original co-sponsor to a resolution declaring that the United States unequivocally stands with Israel and its people. The resolution, which passed the House 412-10, condemns Hamas’s brutal invasion and declares American support for Israel as it continues to defend itself.

I also joined members of Ohio’s congressional delegation in writing a letter to Ohio’s Jewish Communities. In our letter, we strongly condemned antisemitism in all its forms and underscored our support of Jewish Americans. In the weeks since this war began, antisemitic sentiments have been spewed by protesters, politicians, and pundits defending Hamas.

Seeing this spread of hateful rhetoric is abhorrent. There is no place for it in our society, and I want to make it clear to our Jewish friends abroad and here at home that we will always stand with you.

This summer, President Biden approved a $6 billion payment to Iran in exchange for American prisoners. At the time, while the Biden Administration assured us that these funds would be strictly used for humanitarian purposes, I and many Americans called this out as a grave mistake. Iran is the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism and a long-time backer of Hamas; to put it simply, Hamas would not and could not exist without a pipeline of funds from Iran.

Allowing $6 billion to flow into Iran, even if its “intended purpose” was for humanitarian aid, allowed the Iranian regime to reallocate even more funds to supporting terrorism. Three weeks after the Biden Administration greenlit this transfer of money to be “held” in a Qatari bank, Iranian-backed Hamas launched their attack on Israel. This is hardly a coincidence.

Immediately after the invasion began, I signed a letter along with nearly 100 of my House colleagues to President Biden urging him to step in and prevent the final transfer of funds from Qatar to Iran. We outlined that this payment would further fuel this war against Israel and empower the further development of Iran’s nuclear build up.

House Republicans simultaneously introduced legislation that would exercise Congress’s power and freeze these funds from reaching Iranian hands.

Blocking Iran’s access to this payment was a commonsense initial action for the United States to take, and I’m glad the Biden Administration eventually stepped up to freeze these funds.

Blocking Taxpayer Funding to Hamas

This week, I co-sponsored legislation that will ensure that no American taxpayer dollars will be authorized to Gaza until the President certifies to Congress that these funds will not benefit terrorist organizations and that there are no hostages currently being held in Gaza.

If we truly want to stand with Israel, in both our words and actions, then we must not give aid and comfort to the very terrorists carrying out barbaric acts of violence and kidnapping civilians.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson

This week, Mike Johnson was elected to serve as the 56th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. I proudly cast my vote for Speaker Johnson who, throughout his tenure in Congress, has shown that he is a principled conservative and dedicated public servant.

Speaker Johnson is the leader the House needs as we put together a support package for Israel. We also face an ongoing crisis on our southern border and have a federal government that is in desperate need of accountability and oversight. I look forward to working alongside Speaker Johnson to get the job done.

Welcoming Students to Washington

It is always an honor to welcome school groups from our district to the Capitol. This month, I spoke with students from Cambridge Middle School and Granville Christian Academy.

The students came prepared with tons of questions and took plenty of selfies on the Capitol steps. Both groups were blessed with beautiful weather, and I hope they had a memorable visit to our nation’s capital.
