While some are fueling tensions, I am focused on listening and learning, not only for de-escalation, but so we can figure out a productive way forward together. This week, I met with and heard from law enforcement officers, Black community and faith leaders, and local officials about their perspectives on actionable federal and local initiatives to address inequalities in our justice system. I am focused on meaningful solutions aimed at making our communities better, safer places to live, work, and raise our families.
As your congressman, my role is to help solve problems, not perpetuate them. This takes many forms: through legislation; by promoting open-dialogue about the challenges we face; or simply helping constituents navigating cumbersome bureaucracy. Problem-solving comes down to candid conversations, mutual respect, and the pursuit of common ground.
Every person I spoke with agrees: increased transparency is needed to ensure accountability. That is why, this week, I co-sponsored the Walter Scott Notification Act (H.R. 7188), requiring states to report the details of fatal police shootings to the U.S. Attorney General, and reducing federal funding for non-compliance. This is step is the first of many in addressing needed police and justice system reforms.
I look forward to continuing these conversations and encourage you join this effort by sharing your perspective over the phone at (614) 523-2555 or by sending me a note via email.
