With Congress unable to pass an extension of government funding before the new fiscal year began on October 1, the federal government officially “shut down” today. This means only essential services will continue to operate.
While I hope this shutdown will be brief, I will be sure to keep you updated on any new developments. For most Ohioans, day-to-day disruptions will be minimal. Here are some frequently asked questions on what a shutdown might mean for you:
Will I continue to receive Social Security payments?
Yes. Social Security and SSI checks will continue during the shutdown. However, benefit verifications and card issuance could pause.
Will food assistance programs like SNAP be impacted?
SNAP and WIC will continue operating normally for now, though a prolonged shutdown could affect program funding.
Are Medicaid and Medicare impacted?
Medicaid, Medicare, and disability insurance services will continue, and beneficiaries will still receive their benefits.
What about veterans services?
VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers will be open as usual and providing all services. VA benefits will continue to be processed and delivered, including compensation, pension, education, and housing benefits.
Call Centers: VA’s primary call center (1-800-MyVA411) and the Veterans Crisis Line (Dial 988, Press 1) will remain open 24/7. The VA Benefit Hotline (1-800-827-1000) will be available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. More info.
Will I still be able to visit National Parks and federal lands?
National Parks, parks that collect fees, park roads, lookouts, trails, and open-air memorials will largely remain open during the shutdown. Be sure to check your destination’s website and social media pages to confirm its operation status before visiting.
Will air travel be disrupted?
Air traffic controllers and TSA agents are considered essential employees and will continue working to ensure safe air travel.
What if I need a new/renewed passport?
Passport services should still continue, including expedited services if necessary.
Consular operations domestically and abroad, including passport and visa services and assistance for American citizens abroad, will continue during a lapse in government funding. Certain domestic support for consular operations will be suspended. More info.
Can I still send mail?
Yes. The U.S. Postal Service will continue to pick up and deliver mail as usual.
Are Capitol and White House tours in Washington affected?
Visitor centers and tour guides are considered non-essential during shutdowns, so tours of federal buildings will be unavailable.
