WORTHINGTON - Congressman Troy Balderson (OH-12) today announced Pleasant Middle School sixth-grade student Lane Johnson as the winner of the 2021 Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge is an annual competition showcasing the value of computer science and STEM education by encouraging middle and high school-age students to learn how to code through the creation of their own apps.

Driven by his passion for role-playing games (RPGs), Johnson developed an app featuring heroes who team up for exciting adventures.

“The Congressional App Challenge offers a unique opportunity for students to showcase their technical capabilities and to inspire their peers to pursue career paths in computer science,” said Congressman Balderson. “As one of this year’s youngest competitors, Lane has applied his passion and creativity to design a product for others’ enjoyment. He should take great pride in this outstanding achievement.”

The app, which Johnson named Cats vs. Dogs: The RPG, is an interactive game that allows players to choose their characters’ abilities and to navigate through different environments and obstacles.

A unique component to Johnson’s app is all of the character graphics displayed throughout the game are hand-drawn by him.

“I loved making my app and drawing the pictures used in it. I’m so excited about winning 1st place,” said Johnson. 

Entries from students across Ohio's 12th Congressional District were assessed by a panel of local experts on several criteria, including the demonstrated knowledge of coding and programming skills, as well as the quality and implementation of their ideas.

Johnson’s winning app will be eligible for exhibition in the U.S. Capitol Building, and will be featured on the House of Representatives’ website.
