Guidance for Furloughed Federal Workers During Partial Government Shutdown

UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES

Furloughed federal workers, in most cases, may be eligible to receive unemployment compensation insurance benefits through their respective states of employment. Below are a few important considerations when determining whether to file for benefits:

  • Federal employees affected by the federal government shutdown can file for Ohio Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits if they are partially or totally unemployed due to the federal shutdown.
  • Federal employees who wish to file for unemployment insurance are encouraged to file with the state where the job is located, not necessarily their resident state.
  • New Ohio UI claims may be filed online at http://www.unemployment.ohio.gov (go to the “Unemployed Workers” section under the tab, “File/Appeal Benefits”). Those needing special assistance may call (877) 644-6562.
  • If individuals are paid Ohio UI benefits and later receive backpay for the same weeks, the UI weeks will be considered overpaid, and ODJFS will send a notice requiring repayment of the benefits.

SUPPORT LINE FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES IMPACTED BY PARTIAL SHUTDOWN

In collaboration with other members of central Ohio’s congressional delegation, I recently announced the launch of a Support Line for federal employees, both furloughed and deemed essential, as well as contracted, who have been impacted by the current partial government shutdown.

By dialing 1-833-876-0937, callers will be promptly connected to my office where constituent caseworkers are available to assist those encountering issues with their employing federal agencies, such as obtaining approval to file for unemployment or to seek outside employment. The OFIS Support Line can also provide information on certain publicly available resources for those affected by the partial shutdown, such as accommodations offered by major community banks.

If you, or someone you know, are a federal employee who has been impacted by the current lapse in appropriations, you are encouraged to call 1-833-876-0937 for information and assistance.
