Balderson Celebrates Official Reopening of Gaysport Bridge, Discusses Relentless Effort to Secure $3 Million in Federal Funding

After more than three years of collaboration and determination alongside Muskingum County officials, the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

BLUE ROCK, Ohio – Congressman Troy Balderson joined Muskingum County officials today for a special ceremony marking the official grand reopening of the Gaysport Bridge.

“After visiting the Gaysport Bridge with County Engineer Mark Eicher in 2021, it was clear that we needed to move quickly – but the progress made in just three short years has been remarkable,” said Balderson. “This is a prime example of what we can achieve when all levels of government – local to federal – come together.”

“Ahead of schedule and under budget: these are words you rarely hear associated with public projects. But you did it, and it has been my honor to help make this project a reality. Congratulations, Mark, and to your entire team at the Engineer’s office,” added Balderson.

County Engineer Mark Eicher and Congressman Balderson visit the Gaysport Bridge in July of 2021 to discuss replacement and repair options.

Located approximately 12 miles south of Zanesville, the Gaysport Bridge connects State Route 60 and Old River Road, over the Muskingum River. Closed in 2021 due to public safety concerns, the bridge is the only crossing point in a 17-mile stretch between McConnelsville and Philo, making the project critically important for local first responders and school districts.

The $3 million in federal funding secured by Rep. Balderson was used to make major updates to the bridge and replace the supporting sandstone piers, which were over 100 years old.
